The betrayal bounty on Jesus' head was thirty pieces of silver. In exchange for the payment, Judas, one of Jesus' apostles, betrayed him to the religious and political authorities. They paid him the bounty, but later, used the money to purchase a burial field. It was a very fitting use for the money, because the cost of betrayal is death.
Many believe that they can betray Jesus now, refusing to acknowledge his impending return in order to remain "safe," and when the time of his return draws near, begin to acknowledge him. They assume that their betrayal is akin to the apostle Peter's, and will easily and quickly be forgiven. But the betrayal of a confused, weak and grief-stricken Peter is worlds apart from the plotting betrayal of a Judas who seeks his own self interest. The betrayal that is happening today, among men and women who now know the truth, is of a kind that is unforgivable. It shuts the door to God's kingdom by refusing to blow the trumpet and sound the alarm so that men and women can begin to prepare their hearts and minds. It is blasphemous.
